Horse Chestnut trees

Beautiful: With their majestic white or red flowers, graceful profiles and autumn conkers, horse chestnuts are perhaps the best known ¿ and one of the best loved ¿ trees of the British Isles

This gorgeous tree is not in Kensington Gardens. The trees in the gardens grow to an amazing height instead of broad like this one. (This is a comment from someone who lives in Utah where tall trees are rarely seen.) I decided to see what I could learn about the fly and the horse chestnut tree.  I came across this very sad article from the Daily Mail online..  An alien moth imported by a truck is killing the chestnut trees in England and Wales.  Some one has suggested saving some "conkers" to plant in the future when the moth is destroyed.

Horse chestnuts were so-called to distinguish them from sweet chestnuts.

Remove and throw away all the stalks that are tough and fibrous, or hollow; cut the others into strips ... gilt In honour of the manor's wealthy lord; While chestnut trees in front their shade afford To seats beneath, ... This will keep the flies away.

This a very lengthy article in a journal and it is in very tiny print.  Published by Stanford Press.  I did not read it.
