Walking on the beach

A rare shot of a crab.  They disappear under a rock so quickly.

For years I have tried to figure out what type of bird this is. I look at one site and decide it is a sand piper, then another one and I am sure it is a plover.  Looking at some official sites for tide pools, I came across a picture of this little bird that we see so often on the beach.  The jury is in.  This is definitely a dogwit.  Strange name, isn't it?

Adult Nonbreeding

This year we have seen only one solitary egret.  In past summers we have always seen a group of two or three of them.

We think this is the house that took two years to build.  But we aren't sure. I wish we had counted how many houses it was from the end.  So many of the houses look remarkably like boxes with balconies

One of our favorite sights. Under the Scripps pier. The tide is still quite far out so we could see all of the barnacles that have attached themselves to the pylons.

Looking north along the shore.

An unusual sight on the beach.  A small sand hill with a sand chair on top.  When we walked passed him again, he was sitting in his chair looking out on the ocean.

View to the south of the beach.

Looking north. We were there very early so there were not a lot of people around.  Mostly surfers and divers coming back to the beach with their tanks and equipment.

We think that this is the house that has been under construction for the last two years.  So many of the houses are shaped like boxes with balconies.  We wish we had thought to count how far the new house was from the end of the row. Last year it was a structure made of pressed board.
