Donut Day at Del Mar

Every summer I look forward to the Donut Day at the Del Mar race track.  The donuts are free, but the big attraction for me is seeing the track and its buildings and especially the horses.

Here I am enjoying the not quite thawed out orange juice and the last of my donut.

Trevor Denman is one of the highlights of the morning at the race track.
Earl noticed that Trevor was using a cane when he walked up to the podium.  We were relieved to hear that it was an injury that would heal.  He said that he fell off the back of a tractor on his farm in Minnesota.  His leg was broken in two locations.  This happened about four months ago and he is just graduating to walking with a cane. The track manager added another story of Trevor telling a group of people that he had encountered a bear that was about to attack a young girl.  He stepped in and the girl was safe but his leg was broken.

The audience gathered to hear Trevor and some other racing celebrities who would appear later.  We did not stick around to hear who they were or what they had to say.  We left so that we could walk on the beach at Del Mar.

Painting by Mary Helmreich. On this page are paintings of several of my favorite places in the area.

Horses and jockeys bolt out of the gate at the start of a recent race at Del Mar. The track continues to focus on altering expectations amid an uncertain industry.

This horse is there every year.  We have pictures from past years of the children and/or grandchildren with this horse.  Like Mickey Mouse, he does not talk.

I asked Earl to take some pictures of the old photographs on the wall at the race track.  I mistakenly thought that since they were not framed under glass that there would not be a reflection of the camera.  Hmmm

Del Mar Racetrack: General Manager Bill Quigley, President Bing Crosby, and Vice President Pat O'Brien were more than a management team in the early days of Del Mar. They created a Del Mar lifestyle that endures to this day.   Another gem from Pinterest

I could not resist adding this one.

All around Solana Beach and Del Mar you can see horses like this.  They are decorated by different artists but are all cast in the enlarged form of the horse on the Breeders' Cup

The “Art of the Horse” campaign put 20 Torrie horse statues up for sponsorship. Those sponsors chose the location and the artist to paint their statue. Some of the Torrie horses will go up for auction after the Breeders’ Cup, others will remain with their owners.

The paddock.  We just missed some horses that were taken from here out to the track.

Art of Horses  This twitter page shows almost all of the horses that are scattered around both cities.

We are not convinced that it was an accident that these two fire engine yellow cars
were parked side by side.

Looking north along the beach in Del Mar

The only fishermen/women at La Jolla Shores go out in boats. The waters there are protected.
It is interesting to see the many people fishing along the beach in Del Mar.

The tide was out so that the beach was spacious.  As all of our family knows, when the tide comes in the beach area becomes very, very small in places. There were not very many people at the beach because it was early but the ocean was covered with surfers.
