Shopping on Portobello Road

Map of Portobello Road

Portobello Road is the one in red.  We live a short walk away.

I have come to the conclusion that the business to be in now is construction.  Possibly specializing in scaffolding.  To rent or to sell.
These buildings are not very far from each other and are a typical sight on the streets where we live.  This part of London at least seems to have money to remodel and refurbish homes and businesses.

The green plywood wall is frequently seen too.  It is an area that the construction workers use that can be locked up at night.

Portobello Road on the weekend.  It will be much busier on Saturday and Sunday.  At the moment it is still possible for a car to cautiously drive down the road. During the next two days, the street will be packed with people taking up the entire road.

Thimbles used to a collection item for holiday goers. Each would have a picture or symbol from a different town. Spoons were also popular as collector items when I was young.  They too were an easy souvenir to bring home from your travels.

When I got there this morning about ten some of the stalls were just in the process of setting up.  I wonder what they do at night.  Leave the stall, but pack up all of their goods? Many of the stalls selling rings and other jewelry were only partway through the process of setting our their wares.  Some "antique" jewelry but a lot handmade on Portobello Road items

I noticed the March teacup as I was walking by.

Lots of porcelain figurines for sale.

Beatrix Potter china set next to the metal soldiers.
I picked one single standing soldier up out of curiosity.  The price on the bottom of the tiny figure was 18 pounds.

Lots of fruits and vegetable stalls. Many things so much less than the prices in the stores.  The only thing I bought was a pound of big dark red cherries for 2.99.  They have been selling for anywhere from 12 to 18 pounds a kilo in the grocery stores.

About 18 pounds for a waving Queen Elizabeth at Pylons.  I was so disappointed that they did not have her in her favorite yellow outfit. She is going to give a speech at Parliament next week, but it had to be scheduled around the Ascot Derby. The Queen does not want to miss any of the four days of racing.

In case you are feeling homesick while in London.

Souvenirs and white t-shirts were available at this stall.

Everywhere we go there are charitable societies running thrift stores. At the Salvation Army there are church services.  A few doors down the street, a shop funding cancer research.

I didn't take a picture of the sign letting you know that Sister Jane's is a girls school.

A store on Portobello selling unusual sweaters.

On Portobello with all of the row houses.

One of the three nearby Tube stations.  The other two are Queensway and Bayswater.  These two last stations service different lines.
