On Saturday Paris hosted the Breakfast Run. It is a 5 k run that most of the marathon runners participate in. Following the race the city was flooded with people wearing their green t shirts.
On the Metro a young man in a green t shirt gave up his seat for me and we started talking. I found out that he has been running for less than 10 years. His auntie got him started when she started running for health reasons. He is from Dublin but lives in London. He has a half brother from South Africa who lives in San Francisco. He is going to run the marathon there in August. He is staying in Paris with a friend who lived at the end of the line we were riding on. :o) You do not need to have a qualifying time to run in the Paris Marathon but you must have a doctor's certificate. Since our Irish friend's mother is a GP it was no problem.
Kenenisa Bekele from Ethiopia set a new record.
That's it. Fortunately we did not encounter any runners yesterday since there were 50,000 of them out there. And they came to the Tour Eiffel.
The professor wanted to know why strangers talk to me. This was a simple one. Here was a very excited man who just run a race that finished with a croissant and a cup of coffee and he was about to run a marathon the next day. He had no one to share his exuberance with until I was interested in listening. I enjoyed meeting him briefly following his race.
