An Unusual Day
This morning we got on the Metro and rode all of the way on the RER out to Disneyland Paris. After taking a few pictures, we tried to get back to the train. The Professor thought our passes would work. Unfortunately next week is the free week.
Not too surprisingly our children in the US wanted to know how we liked the park. Of course, we did not actually buy tickets and go in. One of our daughters commented' "You guys are like Porky Pig's family that only take a trip to Happyworld's parking lot. Ahuh. That is us.
Following our misadventures we got off the Metro at the Arc de Triomphe
and walked for awhile down the Champs Elysees.
The green banners are from the Paris Marathon.
The Grand Palais
We turned to our right and went to the Petit Palais. Because of a special exhibition at the museum there was a long line of people waiting to get in, but we were directed to a side door since we wanted
only to visit the garden.
only to visit the garden.
I have been to the Petit Palais several times and have completely concentrated on the art inside or the garden outside. However, by accident I looked up and discovered that the outdoor garden had so much more to offer.
According to an internet source: "To decorate the vaulted ceiling of the garden portico, Paul Baudoüin, who had studied under Puvis de Chavannes, reinvented the art of fresco painting which had been neglected since the Renaissance. He painted a huge vista of vines interspersed with medallions featuring The Months of the Year and The Hours of the Day and Night. The three large sections of the vaulted ceiling are punctuated by the feminine allegories of the Seasons."
In his November 30, 2009 posting to his, Richard Nahem has photographs of all of the
medalions on the ceiling on the arcade in the garden.
I do not know the source of this beautiful vase or urn. The flowers are three dimensional.
