Colosseum as we were driving in from the airport (Fiumicino)
We took a van with four other people into the city. We were glad that we did
we saw some of the city as we drove to our B &B.
La Residenza del Principi
on Viminale Square
Our Bed and Breakfast was on the 5th floor of this building. This is the entry.
It had a very old fashioned elevator. I didn't think to take a picture of it. It was the type that you
have to be sure to close the inner and outer doors or the elevator can go nowhere.
This is the type of elevator.
Our room. Very elegant and fit for a king/queen. Just a little
worn and aging, but very fun.
The largest key is for the exterior door leading to the street. The next largest is for the
door leading from the elevator to the B & B on the 5th floor. The key for the room has the black
top. The other key is for the safe.
Our modern bathroom. The shower doors opened just enough to get in and out.
If I had weighed one ounce more I could not have got through the sliding door.
And yes. The toilet seat was square.
Looking out the window of our room onto the Viminale Square
A very well guarded building. We saw a great many police and soldiers outside buildings in Rome.
David and Emanuel who were attending the conference from Belgium said that they are seeing the same type of heavy security there.
Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
We had to go through security and a metal detector to enter the church.
When we entered the basilica one man was stacking red chairs.
I noticed that many of the pictures online have interior shots with the red seats
placed ready for a gathering.
Back of the basilica
Steps lead down to the confessio (a crypt in which relics are placed), where a statue of Pope Pius IX kneels before a reliquary containing a fragment of Jesus' manger.
