At the beginning of each racing season at the Del Mar racetrack, there is a donut day when
everyone is invited to come eat a donut and have some juice while they
either watch the horses work out or listen to Trevor Denman talk about racing.
He retired this past year and is only calling the races here in Del Mar. He said
he was nervous yesterday because he had not worked since last fall. He came through
with flying colors.
The man with Trevor is a clocker. I do not remember his name. He times the horses when
they work out. Someone else is responsible for times on race day. He has
been doing this since 1978. He mentioned nothing about retiring.
Walking ring
After one or two circuits of the walking ring, the horses head to the track for the parade to the post. Like all athletes, horses must warm up. They walk or trot alongside escort ponies (so-called regardless of size or breed) in the post parade and then jog to the starting gate.
Too much sun behind the riders and horses
The small jokey statue has a very checkered history.
I looked online to see if I could find some information about this man
welcoming people to the racetrack. So far no luck.
