I had a great evening at the Kazan Restaurant in McLean, Virginia. Our hostess and I talked and talked and the food was incredible.
Of course, our hostesses were very generous and provided us to a feast. The restaurant was crowded so I could see that you needed reservations. We got there just after six thirty and left about 9:40. I was surprised when I looked at my watch and saw what time it was. The evening just sped by.
I have no idea what we had for appetizers. A huge platter full of a variety of foods. My favorite food was small slices of chicken that were sprinkled with red...paprika? There were swirled mounds that looked like very fancy deviled eggs, but were not. Olives and an egg roll looking item, but I did not try it. Please note that there are only three on the plate. Stuffed grape leaves. It was fantastic.
We had doner kebab. Lamb over a bed of yogurt and pita bread. I found out later that it is served only three times a week. Two days for lunch and Saturday for dinner.
I am including a note from an expert on Turkish food, my daughter:
It actually sounds like you ate Iskander kebab with the bread and yogurt and tomato sauce. It is what I would have recommended. The "egg rolls" were sigara borek. It is like a fried tortilla filled with feta cheese. I'm sorry you didn't try it. Eser's favorite food is the stuffed grape leaves--dolma.
I asked Eser about the whipped food and he didn't know

We had Peach Melba for dessert. Our hostess insisted that I try it. It was very good but I could have gone for a dessert with chocolate. :) I am struggling to avoid desserts and sugar, so a chocolate dessert at this time in my life sounds very, VERY good.
